G. Alan Blackburn, a judge on the Georgia Court of Appeals, will not seek re-election when his term expires at the end of 2010.

“I have been honored to have been elected by the citizens of Georgia to serve on the Georgia Court of Appeals since 1993,” Blackburn said in a statement. “While my future plans are as yet undetermined, I can state I will not be seeking re-election to this court.”

Blackburn, 70, served as the court’s chief judge in 2001 and 2002. He is a former private attorney and once served as an administrative law judge for the Georgia Department of Medical Assistance. He was a charter member of the Georgia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and has served on the state chapter’s board of the National Committee for the Prevention of Child Abuse.

Blackburn’s decision to retire means there will be two open seats on the 12-member appeals court. In June, Judge Edward H. Johnson also announced he will not seek re-election after his current term runs out at the end of 2010.
